Kuljit India : Revisited as a vegan

Kuljit India : Revisited as a vegan

Sometimes I forget that Indian cuisine is very vegan friendly. It is most likely because my favorite Indian dish is (was?) curry with some type of meat. I may about to change that.

Kuljit India is one of the very first restaurants I dined with Mr.Butter, so I have very fond memories of that place. It is about time to re-visit it and experience it as a vegan. Will it still satisfy my taste buds?

The menu has more vegetarian than vegan options. That is fine – less choices means easier decision.

We had several non vegan options because Mr.Butter and my mother aren’t vegan so this review can vouch for both sides.

Aloo Tikki

I tasted a bit of this, bits that were not touched by the yogurt. Just as delicious as I remembered! It was crisp but so tender at the same time. The best way to describe an Aloo Tikki is comparing it to Samosa, but multiple times softer! The freshly chopped coriander and onions really lighted up the taste as well. A must try.

Lamb Curry

This was for my mother. She said the curry was on the thicker side and the spices only surged at the end of each mouthful.  So, the burn is quite giving. She preferred the curry from Thanjai, which was more fragrant.

Saag Aloo

Cooked/withered spinach dishes usually do not appeal to me, but with limited vegan choices, I can’t afford to be picky. Saag alooo was a big green mush. It did not look appetizing, but mixing it with plain basmati rice, my mind completed changed. Like any Indian dish, the spices were so flavourful that I could ignore the presentation. The dish was definitely on the heavy side. I recommend ordering basmati rice to pair with this. Naan bread or any other bread was heavily greased up.

Vegetable biryani

Biryani is like basmati rice with tomato paste. Obviously, it is much better than that, but the general concept is that. It was so comforting and good. The heat of the dish only came up at the end of every spoonful, just like the curry. It was quite odd. This is a dish that I would order if I’m having a bad day.

Kuljit India did not disappoint again. With non-stop take-outs during our stay, I can tell that it is a popular choice among locals as well!
