Ma’tine: Saudade

Ma’tine: Saudade

This is exactly what I feel about Ma’tine: Saudade, a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something.

Ma’tine was on my radar since last year. But life happened ( you know, budget and other restaurants on my radar for longer time), I never made it to Ma’tine until last Saturday, when I learned that Ma’tine was closing. What? Yes, Ma’tine has shut its doors and it is too late for you to go there or go back there.

So here is a post to say farewell to Ma’tine.

Ma’tine was a magical place at the Quarter Latin, actually quite surprising because it emitted plateau vibes. I was quickly enraptured.

The menu was simple, but with very intriguing dishes. It was tough to choose. I had to try as much as I could, afterall it would be my last time.

Of course, I went a bit crazy with the pastries not knowing what was awaiting for me…

Blueberry Bostock. Wonderful. It is like a muffin, but without the top and 10 times better. The inside was so ever moist. I want to know where else serves Bostock in Montreal? I am hopping that Ma’tine did not make their pastries in house.

Squash cake. Truly fabulous. It was served warm with a cranberry sauce on the bottom and a scoop of chocolate ganache. This cake alone was worthwhile to come to Ma’tine everyday.

Boudin. Made heavenly. This was certainly the most delicious boudin I have tasted. Iron flavor, there was none. It extruded so many savoury flavors. Combined with the sweet potatoes, the boudin was in full disguise. If I was blindfolded, I wouldn’t have guessed that it was boudin.

Bacon slab with soba. Unusual choice of ingredients for brunch, but it worked so well. The bacon slab was simply a beautiful piece of ham and the soba was so creamy. Definitely, one way to be energized in the morning.

The high and low feeling when I stepped out the door. Ma’tine, you really are something. Saudade.

What kind of feeling did Ma’tine trigger when you heard about their closure?
